My good friend and I were recently talking about how much we enjoyed watching the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and how Queen’s inspiring story impressed us. We thought this film taught some valuable, universal lessons. Here’s what we learned.
To create something extraordinary – music in Queen’s case – we need to celebrate one’s uniqueness while at the same time embracing that of others. When we allow our ideas and unique senses of self to meld with those of others, we can create something new and amazing. Consider this versus where we are today, where a lot of what we seem to do is point out differences and draw boundaries around diversity: my culture, your tribe, his ethnicity, their religion.
Our view is that by celebrating the differences and having the will to adopt and transform them is what provides us with the opportunity to be extraordinary. Acceptance requires openness to new ideas that are derived not from a single person’s experience but from the collective group.
But, there is often a leader that must stand in front of the group facing the audience. That leader must have confidence in the message that was created and deliver value. Bohemian Rhapsody, then, actually is a statement about three important traits that apply to any arena:
Leadership – Championing new ideas and having the conviction to face the market, inspiring others to follow.
Creativity – Conformity often impedes the path to the next big thing - song, venue, solution or innovation. Creation is often a team sport, and relying on a single perspective can prevent you from finding something new.
Acceptance - We take calculated risks and we all have differences. Being open to the ideas of others takes courage because it is sometimes uncomfortable. Seek diversity, take the good from what you find and be open to something new. Sometimes what we are seeking is actually right in front of us, we just need a bit of patience and understanding.
Kudos to Queen for embracing these three traits and making amazing music because of it.
