Data processing bias in data analysis
- Have you ever noticed how some patterns in data seem too clean, too uniform, too expected? Sometimes that's not the data, it's how the data was processed. Data processing bias happens when the way data is prepared, grouped, or transformed, leads to systematic inaccuracies or distortions, often without us even realizing it. These distortions aren't just technical. They shape funding decisions, resource allocation, and policy outcomes. When the bias goes unchecked, real people are impacted. How we group or analyze data can unintentionally introduce bias, especially when we lump everything together. Aggregating data at a high level can make us miss differences that make a difference, making it harder to see when certain groups are being excluded from the narrative.
